"The biggest benefits of passage would be to address what a vast majority of Americans now support, both Republicans and Democrats, and that is an end to the criminalization and prohibition of cannabis," a spokesman for MPP said.
Last week, Sen. Sharif Street filed a bill with the Judiciary Committee to decriminalize up to 30 grams of cannabis. Currently, possession and distribution of 30 grams of cannabis (or eight grams of hashish without intent to sell) is a misdemeanor punishable by up to 30 days imprisonment and a $500 fine.
"We could turn around and it’s June and there could be five or more states that have legalized. That could change the conversation in Congress," said Steve Hawkins, MPP's executive director.
