Wash.: Last chance to move marijuana decriminalization bill to Senate floor
We recently notified you that SB 5615, which would make adult possession of 40 grams or less of marijuana a civil infraction punishable by a $100 fine, was in the Rules Committee and needed to be sent to the Senate floor for a full vote before March 12. Many of you have sent e-mails in support of this much-needed legislation — thank you!
This is the last week to make sure SB 5615 has a chance at becoming law, and local activists — including the ACLU — need your help to make sure this sensible bill doesn't die.
Last week, the Washington State Office of Financial Management issued a fiscal note that estimates that state, county, and local government could save over $16 million by enacting SB 5615. Such a law could also generate $1 million in revenue, more than half of which would be earmarked for Washington's under-funded drug treatment and prevention programs.
Our records indicate that your state senator is on the Rules Committee, so it is very important that he or she knows that you support SB 5615. If you have already sent your senator an e-mail in support of SB 5615, thank you. If you have not, please do so today.
We need as many people calling committee members in support of SB 5615 as possible, so please pass this alert along to others in your community who support keeping responsible adults out of jail for simply possessing marijuana.
Thank you for supporting the Marijuana Policy Project and all of our allies. |
