Hearing Wednesday; contact your legislators today!

Published: January 12, 2010

An important bill that would reduce the penalty for possessing a modest amount of marijuana, HB 1177, has been scheduled for a hearing before the House Committee on Public Safety & Emergency Preparedness this Wednesday, January 13, at 1:30 p.m. Also on the committee’s agenda is a discussion of HB 2401, a bill that would tax and regulate marijuana in a manner similar to alcohol. E-mail your legislators today and urge them to support sane and logical marijuana reform in Washington.

HB 1177 will reclassify adult marijuana possession from a misdemeanor carrying mandatory jail time to a civil infraction imposing a $100 penalty that could be paid by mail. The bill will save the state $16 million and keep marijuana possession cases from clogging our criminal justice system. Our allies at the ACLU are leading the effort for this sensible bill.

Please take a moment today to contact your representatives and urge them to support both HB 1177 and HB 2401. Remind them that we need to stop wasting public safety resources and stop treating adult personal use of marijuana as a crime. It is time for logical reform!

Please contact your legislators today and urge your friends and neighbors to do the same!

Thanks for your time and support.
