New York Gov. Paterson Discusses Using Marijuana and Cocaine

NEW YORK — Gov. David Paterson says many Americans tried marijuana and other drugs during the 70s and went on to lead responsible lives. And so did he.

The 53-year-old Paterson said in a cable TV interview in Manhattan last night that he tried cocaine a couple of times when he was about 22 or 23. And he said he tried marijuana when he was around 20.

Paterson was lieutenant governor under Gov. Eliot Spitzer, who resigned this month amid a prostitution scandal.

Last week, Paterson and his wife disclosed they each had committed adultery several years ago during marital strife.

In last night's interview, Paterson pointed out that he had acknowledged to a television journalist after a 2006 gubernatorial Democratic primary debate that he had used illegal drugs. But since he was just running for lieutenant governor, no one paid much attention.
