New Law May Keep Minor Marijuana Offenders From Prison

Starting Sept. 1, a new bill may allow Texans busted for marijuana possession to avoid prison.

Under House Bill 2391, police officers will have the option of issuing citations to those found with pot, rather than arrest them.

The rule only applies to people found with four ounces of pot or less.

The law also states that offenders must live in the county where they were caught, and must not be considered a threat to public safety.

The bill was intended to cut down on over-crowded jails.
