Title:
Texas bill would eliminate jail time for marijuana
Message:
Texas is known for a lot of things, one of which is its unusually draconian view towards marijuana, particularly if you’re a celebrity on a tour bus. If you don’t believe me, just ask Willie Nelson, Fiona Apple, rapper Nelly, or any of the roughly 70,000 people who are arrested for marijuana possession in Texas every year.
Houston Democrat Harold Dutton is trying to change that. He has again filed legislation that would make possession of up to one ounce of marijuana a class C misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of up to $500, but with no possibility of jail time. Possession of two ounces or less is currently a class B misdemeanor, punishable by up to 180 days in jail and a fine of up to $2,000 dollars.
Ask your legislators to co-sponsor or support HB 184.
The Texas Legislature hasn’t shown any support for sensible marijuana reform like this in the recent past, so this bill faces an uphill climb. It’ll only get serous consideration if people like you ask your elected officials to support it, then forward this on to your friends and ask them to do the same.
Thanks, and happy New Year!
