Letter: Marijuana Prohibition Versus Regulation - Response

Matthew,

Obviously you have not read the recent studies that show that both tobacco 'and' marijuana affect human DNA and chromosomes and contribute to lung cancer, among other major health issues. We also know from extensive studies that marijuana use affects brain development and function. For teens and young adults in particular, this has a broad impact on their future health. Also, anyone who has seen the devastating effects of fetal alcohol-syndrome will certainly dispute your pro-agenda legalization "facts" as well, especially since alcohol is already regulated and heavily-taxed by the government--and it has not curbed this problem or alcoholism either. As you can see, legalization often does not solve the problems it is intended to solve.

With the new scientific information regarding the impact of marijuna on DNA and chromosomes, I personally would like to see some extensive studies on the impact of marjiuana use on rising rates of autism, ADD, ADHD, particularly since this increase is seen among the recent generations that participated in extensive recreational use of the drug. I think it is worth a study or two, at least.

I admit that your Zogby pro-legalization numbers are impressive and probably valid. In fact, you might compare them to similar polling numbers on the White House home page that rated the legalization of marijuana as the number ONE issue of Americans! Amazing, huh? Could it be that those who favor the cause joined forces to stack the numbers in their favor and keep it as the number one national issue? Could it be that every time the White House tries to clear those numbers and start over the drug legalization supporters bombard the site with more votes, sending the issue back into first place? Absolutely true! For that reason, your stats have no validity in my book.

Your point that "former Mexican presidents have suggested it is time for open debate on legalization" is also questionable. It's already a major agricultural crop and money-maker for that country. They can see dollar signs on the horizon in mass quantities! Of COURSE they want to legalize marijuana so they can openly and legally collect more even MORE money from U.S. coffers.

Sorry, Matthew, while I can appreciate your arguments, I'm not buying what you're selling.
