Voters reject Measure 13

Message:

As you may have heard by now, the voters of South Dakota yesterday rejected Measure 13, which would have protected seriously ill South Dakota residents from arrest and prosecution for using medical marijuana with their doctor’s recommendation. While the outcome was disappointing, the campaign itself was inspiring. Operating on a shoestring budget, the South Dakota Coalition for Compassion ran a very impressive campaign despite the free press given to the fear-based “advocacy” of opposition groups.

The Marijuana Policy Project would like to congratulate everyone at South Dakota Coalition for Compassion for all of their hard, tireless, and dedicated work. In particular, MPP would like to thank and single out for praise Emmett Reistroffer, who organized the signature drive for this measure and devoted countless hours of his time to this important cause. The good people of South Dakota are lucky to be able to call Emmett a “native son.” We’d also like to thank multiple sclerosis patient Pat Lynch and former police officer Tony Ryan for being unwavering voices for commonsense and compassion.

Finally, we’d like to thank all of the campaign volunteers and those of you who made phone calls on behalf of Measure 13. Your efforts will not be forgotten.
