House Expected to Vote Today on Medical Marijuana Bill

PROVIDENCE, R.I. Rhode Island could today become the eleventh state to permit medical marijuana use.

Last year, the General Assembly passed a bill that would have legalized marijuana for medical purposes. Governor Carcieri vetoed the bill, but the Senate garnered enough votes to override the governor. House leaders, however, called a recess before taking action. They have scheduled an override vote before the General Assembly's new session begins today at 4 p-m. If the law is adopted, patients registered with the state would be protected from state and local prosecution, but they could still be arrested under federal law.
