Title:
R.I.: Senate Judiciary Committee considers ending marijuana prohibition
Message:
Email your senator and ask her or him to support the Marijuana Regulation, Control, and Taxation Act
The Senate Judiciary Committee just wrapped up a hearing on S 334, the Marijuana Regulation, Control, and Taxation Act (PDF). The bill, sponsored by Sen. Donna M. Nesselbush (D – Pawtucket, North Providence), Sen. Josh Miller (D – Cranston) and Sen. Frank S. Lombardo, III (D – Johnston) would replace Rhode Island’s marijuana prohibition with a system that regulates, better controls, and taxes marijuana sales for adults’ use. Email your state senator today and ask him or her to support this sensible proposal!
The committee heard from many supporters of sensible marijuana policy reform. The committee was reminded that marijuana prohibition takes law enforcement focus away from serious crime while simultaneously enriching and empowering criminals and criminal organizations. Medical researchers and addiction experts discussed how regulatory controls are better at addressing the public health effects of marijuana prohibition. I was fortunate enough to join them all and simply pointed out the absurdity of prohibiting an in-demand product while taxing and regulating the far more dangerous drug – alcohol.
Make sure to ask your state senator to support S 334, and then ask your friends and family in the Ocean State to do the same.
