R.I.: Do you support taxing and regulating marijuana like alcohol?

Message:

This past election, the voters of two states — Washington and Colorado — passed ballot initiatives to tax and regulate marijuana like alcohol. Both measures passed with roughly 55% support. Unsurprisingly, a majority of Rhode Island voters also support taxing and regulating marijuana like alcohol (PDF), but because Rhode Island does not allow for ballot initiatives, it will be up to the legislature to end the Ocean State’s prohibition of marijuana. Please take a moment to thank Rep. Edith Ajello and Sen. Donna Nesselbush for leading the charge.

You probably saw last week that Rep. Ajello and Sen. Nesselbush announced the introduction of their companion legislation to end Rhode Island’s marijuana prohibition. Although a majority of your neighbors support this issue, politicians tend to lag behind the electorate. Introducing legislation to reform entrenched laws like marijuana prohibition takes courage and commitment. Please send Rep. Ajello and Sen. Nesselbush a short email thanking them for their advocacy.

Marijuana laws aren’t going to change themselves; it takes the leadership of legislators like Sen. Nesselbush and Rep. Ajello. Please make sure they know their work is appreciated.
