Rhode Island medical marijuana registry opens
Published: March 31, 2006
Today is a historic day for medical marijuana patients in Rhode Island: Seriously ill Rhode Islanders can now submit applications for ID cards that will allow them to use and grow limited amounts of medical marijuana without fearing arrest from state and local authorities.
If you are a patient, you can obtain an application by clicking here. You will need to fill out a patient form, and your physician will need to fill out a separate form certifying that you have a qualifying medical condition and that he or she feels marijuana's potential benefits outweigh its harms for you. After you submit the application and a $75 fee (or $10 if you receive Supplemental Security Income or Medicaid), the Department of Health will have 30 days to approve or deny the application.
To qualify, a patient must have cancer; glaucoma; HIV/AIDS; Hepatitis C; a debilitating medical condition that produces wasting syndrome or severe nausea; debilitating, chronic pain; seizures; or spasms. To read the entire law or the regulations, click here.
We worked hard for this day, and we couldnt have made it without your support. After two years of calls, e-mails, letters, postcards, commercials, and a billboard, our persistence has paid off. A special thank you goes to the new medical marijuana law's sponsors Sen. Rhoda Perry (D-Providence), and Rep. Thomas Slater (D-Providence) Rhonda O'Donnell, Warren Dolbashian, and all the other patients and medical professionals who testified for the bill.
We will be counting on you to keep working with us next year to prevent the law from expiring in June 2007. So please pass this alert on to your neighbors, friends, and family so that we can become an even larger force for compassion.
