Rhode Island compassion center hearing Tuesday; don't forget to write your legislators

Last week, doctors, patients, and organizations lined up to speak out for safe and regulated distribution of medical marijuana to patients. The impressive lineup was coordinated by Rhode Island Patient Advocacy Coalition (RIPAC), an MPP grantee. It included four doctors, four brave patients — Bobby Ebert, Buddy Coolen, Chrissy Neves, and Bobbi Brady-Cataldo — and representatives of five organizations: the state doctors and nurses associations, CHAMP, RI ACLU, and RIPAC. Only one witness spoke out against the bill at the Senate committee hearing.

The House bill, H. 7888, sponsored by Rep. Thomas Slater will receive a committee hearing in the House Committee on Health, Education, and Welfare tomorrow, Tuesday, April 8. If you can attend to show your support, please do. The hearing will be in Room 135 at the Statehouse, which is at 82 Smith St. in Providence. You can plan to arrive at about 4:15 p.m., though the precise time of the hearing isn't known yet.

Contact your legislators

The effort to allow compassion centers has gotten off to a tremendous start. But it's critical that legislators hear from their constituents that support these bills. Please take a moment to write or call your state legislators. Remember to always be polite, even if you disagree with your legislator's position. Medical marijuana is an issue that many legislators have come around on after once being opposed.

You can visit our Rhode Island Web site to read The Providence Journal's article on the hearing and to see Channel 10's story on it.

If you are a patient, caregiver, or medical professional, e-mail Karen O'Keefe at Karen@mpp.org to see how you can be of special help.

Thank you for your support and compassion. Please forward this alert on to others in Rhode Island so, together, we can ensure that Rhode Island's patients can obtain safe and legal access to medical marijuana.
