Urge House leader to approve medical marijuana interim study

Published: July 14, 2005

This Monday, July 18, Speaker of the House Todd Hiett (R-Kellyville) will issue his decision to approve or reject an interim study to investigate the benefits of medical marijuana in Oklahoma. The fate of Interim Study 58—submitted by Rep. Bill Nations (D-Norman)—now rests in the hands of Speaker Hiett, so please make sure he hears from you before he acts.

Please click here to e-mail Speaker Hiett and urge him to approve Interim Study 58. With just a few clicks, our automated system will allow you to send a pre-written letter to the speaker. Feel free to edit the message to your liking. It takes just minutes, but it can make a world of difference.

Please act now.

After you've e-mailed Speaker Hiett, please follow up by calling his office at 405-557-7353 and politely saying the following:

"I recently learned that Representative Bill Nations has submitted a request for an interim study on medical marijuana. Please approve Interim Study 58, and allow the House to investigate the benefits of medical marijuana. Thank you for your time."

If he commissions the study, Hiett will have the option of assigning it to a currently standing committee or creating a special committee. Rep. Nations' interim study offers legislators a tremendous opportunity to evaluate the efficacy of medical marijuana in Oklahoma. This is the next step toward passing legislation that will protect seriously ill Oklahomans from arrest and prison, so we cannot afford to pass up this chance.

It is also possible for the Senate to launch a medical marijuana interim study, so please click here to e-mail Senate President Pro Tempore Mike Morgan (D-Stillwater) and tell him that you would support the Senate conducting a similar study.

Then, please follow up by calling Sen. Morgan at 405-521-5565 and politely saying the following:

"I recently learned that the House of Representatives is considering an interim study on medical marijuana, and I want you to know that I would support a similar study in the Senate. Please do whatever you can to allow the Senate to investigate the medical benefits of marijuana. Thank you."

After you've taken action, please pass this message along to your friends and family around the state, so that even more voices for reform can be heard. With your help, we can succeed in protecting Oklahoma's medical marijuana patients from criminal penalties. Thank you for supporting the Marijuana Policy Project.
