Bill to decrease marijuana penalties passes Senate, dies in House

Message:

The attitude toward marijuana policy is changing in Oklahoma. S.B. 779, which would have decreased penalties for marijuana possession, passed the Senate by a vote of 26-19. Unfortunately, the bill did not pass the House.

The fact that this bill passed the Senate is a step forward for Oklahoma, but it must be re-introduced next session. Urge your legislators to support this legislation: Only you can convince them that this issue is important to Oklahoma residents.

Please visit Take Action. After you choose your favorite pre-written letter and type in your address, our site will automatically e-mail your letter to your legislators … all with the click of a few buttons. The whole process takes less than two minutes, but it makes a world of difference. Also, you can print the letters and send them to your legislators through regular mail.

Removing the threat of jail for first-time marijuana offenders would have helped the state save money on incarceration costs. In addition, under S.B. 779, individuals would not have been subjected to jail time and huge fines. Unfortunately, the House did not want to permit these benefits. Please ask your legislators to change this harsh policy.

Thank you for supporting the Marijuana Policy Project. We will continue to fight beside you to reduce the harm associated with marijuana in Oklahoma. Please pass this information on so that even more voices for reform can be heard.
