The U.S. Department of Transportation Monday announced a new rule that requires independent drug-testing laboratories that perform drug tests for transportation jobs to analyze each test for tampering.
It currently is optional for laboratories to test samples for tampering.
The rule, which takes effect Monday, Aug. 25, is intended to make it tougher for people applying for transportation jobs to cheat on a drug test.
The rule would cover about 12.1 million U.S. transportation employers, safety-sensitive transportation employees, drug test collectors, labs and medical review officers, the Department of Transportation said in a news release.
"We want to make sure there are no doubts about the ability of anyone working in transportation do their job as safely as possible," said Department of Transportation Secretary Mary E. Peters in the release. "There is no margin for error when it comes to the safety of the traveling public."
The Department of Transportation regulates drug and alcohol testing of transportation workers in the aviation, motor carrier, railroad, transit, pipeline and maritime industries. |
