If a proposal by Democratic Massachusetts Congressman Barney Frank comes to pass, people possesing up to 100 grams (3.5 ounces) of marijuana would no longer be subject to arrest. The proposal, titled HR 5843, would also allow the "nonprofit transfer" of up to an ounce of marijauna. Basically, you can pass your friends the joint, but don't ask for money.
Frank's reasoning? He opposes using tax dollars to condone what he believes is a 'phony war on drugs" which is "filling up our prisons" instead of targeting real criminals. A marijuana smoker is arrested every 38 seconds in the U.S., and Frank finds this preposterous.
"I don't think it is the government's business to tell you how to spend your leisure time," said Frank. "We do not arrest and jail responsible alcohol drinkers, why should we do so for responsible marijuana users?" |
