Marijuana Policy Project

Find out where your state Senate candidates stand on medical marijuana.  If you're not sure what district you live in, you can look up your district using your ZIP code, or you can skip ahead to the candidate table. You can also find your candidates' contact information at Project Vote Smart.

Our questionnaire asked:

1. Do you support eliminating criminal penalties for the doctor-advised, medical use of marijuana by patients with severe, debilitating or life-threatening medical conditions?

2. All 12 current state medical marijuana laws allow patients to cultivate medical marijuana so that they do not have to obtain their medicine on the streets. Do you support allowing state-registered patients to cultivate a limited amount of medical marijuana, if their doctors recommend medical marijuana and they have severe, debilitating or life-threatening medical conditions?

3. Do you support allowing state-registered patients to possess a limited but adequate supply of medical marijuana, if their doctors recommend medical marijuana and they have severe, debilitating or life-threatening medical conditions?

4. Do you agree that states have the right to remove their criminal penalties from medical marijuana, as 12 states have already done, or do you think federal law must be changed before New York state can enact medical marijuana legislation?

MPP believes the best responses, showing support for enacting an effective medical marijuana law, are Yes, Yes, Yes, and States Can Act. Until federal law changes, it's important that state laws allow home cultivation. In addition to our questionnaire, Project Vote Smart (PVS) asked candidates if they "support allowing doctors to prescribe marijuana to their patients for medicinal purposes."
