Title:

Support New Mexico’s medical marijuana program

Message:

While California and Colorado get all the medical marijuana headlines, New Mexico was actually the first state to provide for state-regulated facilities where patients can legally obtain medical marijuana. So why hasn’t New Mexico been in the news more often? Because New Mexico has perhaps the most tightly regulated program in the country, meaning it has generated virtually no controversy. But it has been a lifeline for thousands of seriously ill New Mexicans.

Perhaps that’s why the sponsor of New Mexico’s 2007 medical marijuana law has introduced a bill to provide for dedicated funding for the program. Senate Bill 240 would create a fund, composed entirely of patient and producer registration fees, which the Department of Health could use to hire employees, pay for equipment and training, and otherwise administer the program.

Please ask your elected officials to support SB 240.

Because these fees have to this point been paid into the state’s general fund, the program has had to request funding when new needs arise. This has led to occasional delays in processing applications and mailing registry ID cards. If you’ve been affected by delays, please let me know. And if you’d like to prevent future delays, please ask your legislators to support SB 240.

Thanks for all you do!
