One last chance to protect medical marijuana patients in New Mexico this year'please act now!
Published: February 24, 2006
New Mexico has one last shot to enact a medical marijuana law this year: Gov. Richardson (D) needs to call a special session of the state legislature and include the medical marijuana bill—S.B. 258—on the session agenda. But the medical marijuana patients of New Mexico need you to act immediately for this to happen.
We need you to do two crucial things right now.
1- Please call the governors office right away—at (505) 476-2200—and say:
I am calling to urge the governor to call a special session that includes the Lynn and Erin Compassionate Use Act on the agenda. Seriously ill New Mexicans shouldn't have to fear arrest for using marijuana with their doctors' approval, and Governor Richardson is our last hope for protecting New Mexicans from these unjust laws.
2- Please follow up your call with a letter to the governor, urging him to hold a special session that includes S.B. 258, the Lynn and Erin Compassionate Use Act, which would protect chronically ill patients who use medical marijuana and doctors who recommend it to qualified patients. This link will take you the governors home page, where you can send a message to him. At the bottom of this e-mail, you will find a prepared message for the governor that you can copy and paste into the window that appears when you click on the link.
Please act now. We want to generate as many calls and e-mails to Gov. Richardson as possible.
The Lynn and Erin Compassionate Use Act—S.B. 258—which would protect medical marijuana patients from arrest, was tabled in the House Agriculture Committee by a vote of 4-3. Seriously ill New Mexicans need you to act now to help save this legislation before the session ends on Thursday. We need your help to send the governor as many e-mails as possible.
The Lynn and Erin Compassionate Use Act allows qualified patients suffering from certain serious illnesses such as cancer, HIV/AIDS, and epilepsy to use marijuana with recommendations from their doctors. New Mexicos medical marijuana patients need your help to ensure that this bill passes and medical marijuana becomes available to those in pain and suffering.
For more than two years, New Mexico has been on the cusp of joining 11 other states in passing medical marijuana reform to protect patients from arrest, and this is our last chance this year to help the chronically ill of New Mexico.
Please e-mail today and call (505) 476-2200. You can find a pre-written e-mail message below.
Thank you for supporting the Marijuana Policy Project. Please be sure to pass this message along to others, so that together we can give seriously ill New Mexicans the protection they deserve.
Sample Message to the Governor:
Dear Governor Richardson,
Please call a special session of the legislature and place the Lynn and Erin Compassionate Use Act—S.B. 258—on the agenda. This act, introduced by Sen. Cisco McSorley (D-Albuquerque), would dramatically help chronically ill and suffering New Mexicans who rely on medical marijuana to ease their pain and bring peace to their lives. Unfortunately, this bill was tabled in committee, and the only way we can bring justice to the patients of New Mexico is if you add it to the agenda of a special session. The chronically ill and suffering patients of New Mexico need your help; why deprive those in pain and sickness from something that may help to bring peace and wellness to their lives?
The citizens of New Mexico have been impressed and inspired by your courageous support for this issue in the past. It took true courage to add the bill to your call during this years regular session, and I hope that you will find the same courage to add the legislation to your special session, as well.
Thank you.
