Title:
Civil asset forfeiture reform bill approved by Senate
Message:
The New Mexico Senate approved a civil asset forfeiture reform bill, 25-10, on Saturday.
Senate Bill 5, which would require a conviction before an individual's property could be forfeited to the state government, has been transmitted to the House and is now pending in the House Consumer and Public Affairs Committee.
Please visit MPP's New Mexico Web site and send an e-mail to your state representative, asking him or her to support this legislation. Several pre-written letters are provided for your convenience.
There are only a few days left in the 2002 legislative session, so it is important that you act quickly.
Be sure to forward this alert to others in New Mexico to ensure that the state's citizens have an opportunity to speak out in favor of bills that will improve New Mexico's drug policies.
In other news, the medical marijuana bill, Senate Bill 8, is stuck in the Senate Judiciary Committee, where it received a 5-5 vote. MPP will let you know if the status of this bill changes.
