New Law Would Allow First-time Offenders To Keep Licenses

First-time drug offenders convicted of disorderly persons offenses will be able to keep their driving licenses, thanks to a law signed Wednesday by Gov. Jon Corzine.

The law removes the mandatory forfeiture of driving privileges for first-time offenders charged with disorderly persons offenses involving infractions of drug law, according to state Sens. Nicholas Sacco, D-North Bergen, and Brian Stack, D-Union City, co-sponsors of the measure.

"This new law will help those who made minor mistakes keep their driving licenses so they can get to work or look for jobs," said Sacco. "It gives discretion to judges so people who made minor mistakes can straighten out their lives."
