New Jersey

Letter: Action Needed On Medical Marijuana Bill

Nine major New Jersey newspapers have endorsed our state's proposed medical marijuana bill. The government shouldn't bar patients from using a substance that greatly reduces their pain.

There is every likelihood that this bill will sit idle in the Assembly Health Committee until it is to late to get it passed this session. It has already been passed in the Senate, and Gov. Corzine has promised to sign it into law if it reaches his desk.

The Assembly Health Committee needs to act soon. They have already let the Compassionate Use Medical Marijuana Bill sit idle in their committee for almost four years. To keep that in perspective, in that time over 40,000 New Jersey residents have died from cancer. Many used marijuana illegally and many more would have if it was legal to do so.

How many more patients should have to die before committee Chairman Herb Conaway finally posts this bill for vote? How many more spasms should an MS patient have? How many more times should a chemotherapy patient vomit? How many glaucoma patients ahould go blind? How many more AIDS patients should waste away?

Assemblyman Conaway owes them all either an answer or a vote on this most important bill.
