New Hampshire House will vote on medical marijuana bill within days.

Despite hearing compelling testimony from patients and medical professionals regarding marijuana's medical benefits last week, the Health, Human Services and Elderly Affairs Committee voted against the medical marijuana bill 12-7 on Tuesday, March 20. Luckily, though, the bill is not dead, and there is still hope to protect seriously ill New Hampshire patients this year. The bill will have a minority report and receive a vote on the House floor. The full House will vote on HB 774 next week, perhaps as early as Tuesday.

Because there are 400 representatives in the New Hampshire House, members often look to the party leadership to decide how to vote. This means that it's imperative that the leadership hear from you. Please call the leadership offices and tell them you support the compassionate medical marijuana bill. The phone numbers for these leaders are:

Speaker of the House and Majority Leader (603) 271-3661

Minority Leader (603) 271-3665

After calling the leadership, please send a letter to your legislators urging them to vote in favor of this legislation, if you have not already done so. Then, follow up with a phone call to your representatives. You can click here to find out who your representatives are, as well as their phone numbers.

Please also take a moment now to write a letter to the editor of your local paper in support of HB 774. We've provided you with some basic talking points to get you started, but a personally crafted letter is much more likely to get published. It's very important that legislators see the widespread support that this legislation enjoys.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to write and call the committee members. During the committee vote, they commented on the number of e-mails and phone calls they've received over the last several days. We need to put this same pressure on all of the representatives now. This will be the most important vote of the entire legislative session for sick and dying citizens of New Hampshire. Please take a moment to write your representatives and let them know this is not an issue that will go away until New Hampshire stops criminalizing patients for treating their conditions.

Thank you for supporting the Marijuana Policy Project. Please pass this message along to friends, family, neighbors, and e-mail lists so that others can stand up for New Hampshire's most vulnerable residents as well.
