Local Schools to Expand Drug Testing

More local high school athletes will be required to take drug tests, thanks to a federal grant. The Clark County School District will receive $450,000 over the next three years to launch random drug test programs at eight high schools.  Eldorado, Centennial, Foothill, Durango, Desert Pines, Del Sol and Mojave High Schools are scheduled to begin testing for drugs in January 2009. Green Valley High began testing student athletes for drugs earlier this year. That program was funded by student fees and donations from the community. Green Valley Principal Jeff Horn says of the 250 students tested this spring, only eight turned up positive for drugs.
