Court Date Set for N.H.P. Trooper Crash

Evidentiary hearing set for October 15

LAS VEGAS — An evidentiary hearing has been set in the case of an off-duty Nevada Highway Patrol trooper who, police said, caused a fatal wreck while under the influence of marijuana.

Sgt. Edward Lattin, 46, was booked this month on one count of felony driving under the influence/drugs resulting in death.

On June 11, Lattin lost control of his truck, causing a three-car collision, police said. Lattin's truck drove over a car, killing passenger Ying H. Warren, 49.

During Lattin's arraignment Tuesday, prosecutors said they may take the case against the suspended state trooper to a grand jury before the evidentiary hearing, which is scheduled for Oct. 15.

Lattin and his lawyer declined comment after his brief court appearance.

Lattin is a 20-year veteran of the N.H.P. and, at one time, headed a team that investigated fatal crashes.

If convicted, he faces two to 20 years in prison.
