Nevada: Act immediately to prevent increased criminal penalties for growing marijuana!

SB 262, which we first alerted you about in March, has been scheduled for a hearing today before the Senate Judiciary Committee. Please call your senator immediately in opposition to this bill.

SB 262 unnecessarily seeks to create new penalties for growing one more marijuana plant than is statutorily allowed for medical use. The proposed penalty for this offense is one year in jail and a $2,000 fine. Patients are already subject to criminal penalties for not acting in accordance with Nevada's medical marijuana act, not to mention loss of their registry card, so this legislation is simply overkill.

Not only did 44% of Nevada voters elect to end marijuana prohibition in 2006, a Zogby International poll released just last week marked the first time in history that a nationwide poll showed majority support for taxing and regulating marijuana (at 52%). You can read more about the poll here.
