Urge your legislators to sponsor a medical marijuana bill in Missouri
Published: January 16, 2006
As the Missouri General Assembly enters the second week of its legislative session, the Marijuana Policy Project and the Columbia Alliance for Patients and Education (CAPE) are committed to continuing the momentum from the 2004 ballot initiatives passed in Columbia and from the overwhelming support nationwide for medical marijuana by introducing statewide medical marijuana legislation in Missouri. But we need your help to succeed.
Please click here to send a letter to your legislators, urging them to sponsor a medical marijuana bill on behalf of the patients of Missouri. Our automated system will allow you to easily send pre-written letters to your legislators, or you can compose the letters yourself. Both state representatives and senators may co-sponsor the bill, and it is vital that we enlist bipartisan support. So be sure to contact your legislators in both houses of the Missouri General Assembly and on both sides of the aisle.
It is time for Missouri to join the 11 sensible, compassionate states that have already enacted medical marijuana legislation. Polls consistently show massive public support for this issue. Clearly, supporting medical marijuana is not only an act of compassion; it is also a popular political move. MPP is determined that seriously ill patients in Missouri will soon get the protection that they deserve.
Please take action today.
If you would like more information or would like to find out how you can get involved, please contact Dan Viets with the Columbia Alliance for Patients and Education at danviets@justice.com or 573-443-6866.
In 2004, Proposition 1, which removed the threat of criminal penalties for medical marijuana patients, won with 69% of the vote (tallying 33,000 votes in favor of the initiative). Sixty-one percent of voters also favored Proposition 2, which removed the threat of arrest for misdemeanor possession of marijuana and marijuana paraphernalia and reduced the penalty to a fine of up to $250.
Thank you for supporting the Marijuana Policy Project. Please pass this message along to friends and family throughout the state so that others can stand up for Missouris most vulnerable residents.
