Title:
Columbia's marijuana initiative, Proposition 1, needs your help!
Message:
The Columbia Alliance for Patients and Education (CAPE) has introduced an initiative that would substantially reduce the penalties for marijuana possession in the city of Columbia.
The initiative, Proposition 1, would establish a fine of $25 for the first offense of possession of less than 35 grams of marijuana. Proposition 1 would also allow medical marijuana patients to possess up to 35 grams of marijuana.
CAPE has been working diligently to conduct polls and gauge support for this initiative, and Election Day is approaching rapidly. CAPE needs your help to get Proposition 1 passed on April 8. Here are some of the things that you can do:
- In the Columbia area, CAPE needs foot soldiers to assist Get Out The Vote efforts in support of Proposition 1. This would involve talking to voters, reminding them to vote, and ensuring that they have transportation to the polls on Election Day.
- The White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) is sending Scott Burns, Director of State and Local Affairs, to Columbia to oppose Proposition 1. CAPE needs your help in countering ONDCP's actions. Please contact CAPE for more information.
- If you are unable to get to Columbia to participate directly in the Get Out The Vote efforts, you can fax or e-mail a letter-to-the-editor to CAPE, and they will send it to the newspaper for you. Please see the To The Editors page for details.
Proposition 1, if passed, would be a positive step in the fight to protect seriously ill medical marijuana patients. This initiative would also treat minor marijuana possession as a violation, not a crime—saving money on incarceration and allowing police to devote attention to violent crime.
