Title:
Mich.: Bill introduced to decriminalize marijuana possession
Message:
State Representative Jeff Irwin (D-Ann Arbor) announced today he is introducing a bipartisan bill that would decriminalize possession of an ounce or less of marijuana in Michigan. HB 4623 would amend state law and remove all criminal penalties including jail time.
Ask your legislators to support this sensible proposal.
Currently in Michigan, possession of a small amount of marijuana — even a single gram — is a misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail and a fine of up to $2,000. Rep. Irwin’s bill would make simple possession of marijuana a civil infraction similar to a speeding ticket. HB 4623 would also eliminate possible jail time and cap fines for people with no prior possession record at $25, one prior at $50, and multiple priors at $100.
This positive change in the law would enable law enforcement to focus on real crime and removes penalties that can jeopardize educational loans and hurt future prospects for employment.
