K-zoo: On Nov. 8, vote for sane marijuana policies

Message:

Attention Kalamazoo voters! This Election Day, November 8, you’ll have the opportunity to vote on an important question:

"Shall the Kalamazoo City Charter be amended such that the use and/or consumption of one ounce or less of usable marijuana by adults 21 years and older is the lowest priority of law enforcement personnel?"

In other words, if passed, Kalamazoo law enforcement officials will be encouraged to avoid arresting and prosecuting responsible adults who choose to use marijuana, a substance less harmful than alcohol, and instead focus on violent crimes and other real threats to public safety. For example, did you know that according to the FBI’s uniform crime reports, a staggering 73% of rapes in Michigan went unsolved in 2009? Every minute an officer spends arresting, transporting, and processing someone for a small amount of marijuana is a minute that could be spent preventing or solving crimes like rape, assault, and murder. And of course, passing this measure would send a strong message to elected officials that voters no longer believe that adults should be punished simply for using marijuana.

According to the latest polls, we’re winning. But we will not win on Election Day unless supporters like you get out and vote. So please be sure to vote on November 8, and encourage every supporter you know in Kalamazoo to do the same. Thanks!
