Anti-pot legislators — fuming over weed-toking scofflaws who are skirting the state’s new relaxed marijuana laws — are vowing to crack down on offenders with tougher sanctions.
"It’s absolutely ridiculous," said Rep. Martin Walsh (D-Dorchester). "The ballot put zero teeth in the law so there’s no way to enforce it."
Since Jan. 1, potheads caught with less than an ounce of marijuana have been slapped with civil citations, but many are refusing to pay the $100 fine.
Walsh, along with Sen. Steve Baddour (D-Methuen), said they plan to explore ways to force potheads to pay up — such as blocking them from renewing their registrations or driver’s licenses until they make good.
"This law clearly needs some changes, and the sooner the better," Baddour said.
