Medical marijuana defense bill gets final approval in legislature

Recently, we told you that the Maryland House had passed legislation to give medical marijuana patients an affirmative defense, removing criminal penalties for the use or possession of an ounce or less of marijuana for medical use. I’m happy to report the Senate has just signed off on the House amendments, meaning the legislature has given its final approval to the measure!

The next and final step is for Governor Martin O’Malley to sign the bill into law. Please, stop what you’re doing and ask the governor to sign SB 308!

With any luck, I’ll be writing you soon to say that Maryland has become the 16th state to remove criminal penalties for the medical use of marijuana. This is yet another important victory for MPP, seriously ill patients, and our allies, and I thank you for all your support. We’re not there yet though, so keep those emails coming in to the governor’s office.

Thanks everyone!
