Gov. O’Malley threatens veto of medical marijuana

Message:

Call or email Gov. O’Malley, and ask him to support medical marijuana patients.

I was in Annapolis Friday to testify in support of medical marijuana legislation, and I left surprisingly optimistic that afternoon. I say “surprisingly” because of the headlines that greeted me: “O’Malley would veto medical marijuana bill.”

Without listening to a word from any of the seriously ill Maryland residents there to ask for compassion, Gov. Martin O’Malley said he was likely to veto any medical marijuana legislation that includes regulated patient access to marijuana this year, and all that based on a letter sent from Delaware’s U.S. attorney to Delaware’s governor.

So why the optimism? Throughout the hearing, support among legislators was unanimous. In fact, plans are already underway to amend the bill to accommodate the governor’s concerns. We may not get a regulated distribution system this year, but there’s a real chance at progress, like removing the threat of arrest from patients and caregivers.

Here’s where you come in: please call Gov. O’Malley’s office, and politely ask him to at least support protecting medical marijuana patients from arrest, even if he will not sign a bill with a regulated distribution system. You can send an email if you don’t have time to call.

Thanks! I’ll keep you posted.
