Maine legislator introduces bill to tax and regulate marijuana

Message:

In yet another sign that marijuana prohibition’s days are numbered, a bill that would remove all state criminal penalties for the use or possession of marijuana has been introduced in Maine. Sponsored by Rep. Diane Russell (D-Portland), LD 1453 would tax marijuana at a rate of 7% and regulate it in a manner similar to alcohol.

Please ask your elected officials to support this historic proposal.

Ending marijuana prohibition in this country would mean billions in sales tax revenue alone, to say nothing of the multi-billion dollar industry it would spur and the jobs and revenue that would accompany it. It would also mean an end to jailing otherwise law-abiding people just for choosing to use a substance safer than alcohol. We could also do a better job of keeping marijuana away from kids if it were sold by licensed, law-abiding businesses rather than drug dealers with no incentive to check IDs. The list goes on and on

Please take just two minutes to contact your legislators and ask them to support LD 1453. When you’re done, post this link on your Facebook page, Twitter feed, or other social networking site.

Thanks! I’ll keep you posted.
