Title:
La.: Senate must act quickly to reduce possession penalties

Yesterday, Rep. Austin Badon’s HB 103, a bill that would reduce marijuana possession penalties for second and subsequent offenses, was approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee in a 4-2 vote.
The bill had previously passed the House 54-38 last week. Unfortunately, time is running short on this year’s session. The Louisiana Legislature plans to adjourn June 6, so the Senate must act quickly to pass this sensible reform.
A two-thirds vote is required to open discussion of the bill on the Senate floor. A majority of senators voted in favor of debating the bill this morning, but the vote fell short of the required two-thirds. Sen. J.P. Morrell (D-New Orleans) has vowed to try for another vote this afternoon.
Please contact your senator NOW and urge him or her to allow this important bill to be debated on the Senate floor. Then, ask your friends and family to do the same.
