Aberdeen Schools May Expand Drug-testing

Officials in the Aberdeen School District will have a panel discussion this fall on the idea of having all high school students enroll in random drug testing.

A voluntary testing program in which parents can enroll their kids is being tried this school year.

The school district serves only as a place for signup.

Avera Saint Luke's Hospital does the testing for $5, which is billed to parents.

Hospital officials randomly select students in grades 6-12 and notify parents of test results. Parents of students who are found to be using drugs are not obligated to notify the school district, however.

The panel discussion in late September or early October on expanding the program will involve school and non-school officials, student leaders and PTA representatives.
