Affliction / Illness: Cancer
I was diagnosed with stage-4 cancer (colon, lymph, and liver) in 2005. After two surgeries and eight months of chemotherapy, I now have a clean bill of health. Medical marijuana helped me get through the debilitating nausea, diarrhea, and general malaise that otherwise rendered me nonfunctional.
While opponents of this compassionate legislation claim that a medical marijuana law would create problems for police, they offer no statistics to support their contention. To the contrary, medical marijuana laws can be of great benefit to the law enforcement community. I know this because I am a former police captain.
Besides keeping legitimate patients out of jail, medical marijuana laws also save officers precious time and resources by giving them more time to deal with real criminals. These laws also help clear up court dockets, saving taxpayers money.
Unfortunately, we don't often hear from supportive officers because the law enforcement community does not encourage them to speak out on issues like this. The fact is that many members of the law enforcement community support these compassionate laws, as do I.
