Illinois: Your help is needed!
Published: February 25, 2009
To pass Sen. William Haine's compassionate medical marijuana bill, SB 1381, through the state senate, it needs to pick up eight more votes than a similar medical marijuana bill received in 2007. The bill has a real chance at passing the senate, but patients need your help to make that happen.
Contact
First and foremost, if you have not yet sent your senator an e-mail, please do so immediately. After you have sent your e-mail, follow up with a call and let him or her know that you support SB 1381. Please be sure to send any feedback to Nathan@mpp.org.
Recruit
Using MPP's sign-up sheets, please collect as many valid e-mail addresses as you can and send them to us. You can scan and e-mail the information you collect to Nathan@mpp.org or mail it to MPP legislative analyst Nathan Miller at P.O. Box 77492, Washington, DC 20013. If you send us at least five valid e-mail addresses, we'll send you a gift.
If people you encounter would like more information about this issue before signing up for our alerts, you may wish to share this brochure with them, which also allows them to sign up for alerts.
Get published
The more positive coverage your senator sees about medical marijuana, the more likely he or she is to vote in favor of SB 1381. Using the talking points we have provided, please put together a short, personalized letter and send it to the newspaper of your choice. If you don't have any luck this week, try again next week. It may take some time to get a letter published, but persistence pays off.
Spread the word
Please pass this alert along to others in your community who may wish to take part in this year's effort to make Illinois the 14th medical marijuana state. You can also ask your doctor or clergy member to sign a statement of principle in support of protecting patients with serious medical conditions from being arrested for using medical marijuana.
Thank you for supporting the Marijuana Policy Project and all of our allies.
