Illinois: Last chance to talk to your representative

Message:

The Illinois House of Representatives is back in session this week to deal with a few last-minute agenda items before the new legislature is sworn in next week. One of the most important bills awaiting action is SB 1381, which would make Illinois the 16th medical marijuana state. The bill could be voted on as soon as Wednesday or Thursday, but it won’t happen unless the sponsor knows he has the 60 votes he needs. That’s where you come in.

This is your last chance: urge your representative to vote “yes.”

The bill has been placed on postponed consideration since a previous effort narrowly fell short in late November. There were 56 representatives who were willing to vote yes then, and thanks to your calls and e-mails we’ve picked up at least a couple votes. Still, we need as many representatives as possible to confirm that they’re willing to vote yes on this bill. So please, take just two minutes out of your day to ask your representative to support SB 1381 so that seriously ill residents of Illinois will no longer live in fear of arrest.

Finally, any time you get a response from your legislator, please forward it on to me at driffle@mpp.org so we’ll know where he or she stands. It’s important for our lobbyists in Springfield to have accurate and up-to-date information.

I hope you all had a safe and happy holiday season, and from all of us at MPP, here’s wishing you a very happy new year. Let’s get 2011 off to a good start in Illinois!
