Help MPP pass a medical cannabis law in Illinois
Published: October 7, 2010
Last
year, the Illinois Senate passed SB 1381, The Compassionate Use of Medical
Cannabis Pilot Program Act, which would protect medical marijuana patients with
doctor recommendations from arrest and establish a system of medical cannabis
organizations that can legally dispense medical marijuana to qualifying
patients. The bill is now pending before the Illinois House of Representatives,
which must pass it before the end of the legislative session in January in
order for the bill to become law. According to the bill’s sponsor, we’re only a
handful of votes shy of a majority in the House, so these last few weeks will
be crucial.
If you would like to help pass medical marijuana
legislation in Illinois, please send us a note today. If you’re a patient,
please also share your story with us.
I’m
writing you today to ask for your help. We need patients and their loved ones,
medical professionals, clergy, and law enforcement officers to speak out in
support of this important legislation. There are a number of ways you can help.
You can collect postcards from voters in the districts of legislators whose
votes will be pivotal. If you’re in a key legislative district, we can help you
share your story with your legislator.
You can also write letters to the editor of your local paper, or talk to
doctors, clergy, and other opinion leaders about signing our statements of
principle.
If
you’d like to get involved, we want to hear from you. Send us an email with your name, contact
information, and address. The address is important because we’ll need it to
find your elected officials. Tell us why this bill is important to you, and
what you’re able to do to help pass it. We’ll be in touch to let you know how
and where to get involved.
We’ve
all worked too hard to see this bill stall just short of the finish line. Send us an email today if you’d like to help
finish the job. If you know a friend who might be interested, forward
this message to them.
And
as always, thanks for all you do!
