Hawaii County will be getting a new police chief. He's the current Deputy Chief Harry Kubojiri.
The Big Island Police Commission wrapped up its meeting just before 10 on Wednesday night.
Commissioners interviewed Kubojiri and former Chief Chadwick Fukui for the job.
Kubojiri won unanimously with 7 votes.
One tricky issue he'll face is what to do about marijuana.
In the last election, a majority of voters decided to make personal pot possession the lowest priority for law enforcement.
Outgoing chief Lawrence Mahuna refused to comply, saying marijuana is still illegal and a danger.
The biggest effect of the November vote is that the department will not getting any new funding for eradication. |
