Hawaii: Submit testimony in support of S.B. 472, H.D. 1 today

Message:

Hawaii’s bill to remove criminal penalties for the possession of a small amount of marijuana has been scheduled for a hearing in House Judiciary on Thursday, March 14. The committee is accepting testimony from now until 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 13. Don’t delay; submit your testimony in support of S.B. 472, H.D. 1 today!

As expected, the House will consider an amended version of the bill that passed the Senate. The amended bill replaces the possibility of jail time for the possession of up to 20 grams of marijuana with a civil fine of $100 (the previous version decriminalized possession of up to 28 grams but called for a civil fine of $1,000). Please consider submitting testimony in support of this sensible approach.

Punitive laws against possession of marijuana do little to combat use rates. Instead, they turn otherwise law-abiding individuals into criminals for merely possessing a small amount of a substance that is objectively safer than alcohol. Help end this ridiculous policy by submitting testimony in support of S.B. 472, H.D. 1 and then encouraging your friends and family to do so as well!
