Hawaii: House set to vote on bill reducing the penalty for marijuana possession

Message:

Email your representative NOW requesting he or she vote “yes” on S.B. 472, HD 1

The Hawaii House of Representatives will soon vote on legislation that downgrades the penalty for possession of up to 20 grams of marijuana to a civil violation punishable by a $100 fine. Let your representative know that possessing a substance that is safer than alcohol doesn’t warrant a criminal record and possible jail time.

The Senate has already passed its own version of this bill. Should the House approve S.B. 472, HD 1, a conference committee will be appointed to work out differences in the legislation before passing a final version on to Gov. Neil Abercrombie. But first things first: urge your representative to support S.B. 472, HD 1, and then ask your friends to do the same!

Lawmakers across the country are realizing that our current marijuana policies need to be reformed. In fact, just this past Monday Rhode Island joined the ever growing list of states that choose civil punishments over criminal for possessing a small amount of marijuana. Will Hawaii be next?
