B.O.E. Approves Drug-testing
The White County Board of Education has given their approval to mandatory random testing of student athletes in the school system. The policy gives the superintendent or faculty the authority to implement the testing procedures and sets forth guidelines for dealing with student who test positive.
The policy was unanimously approved by the board, but member Mitchel Barrett said he would like to have seen steroid testing play a bigger role in the policy. The school system can test for steroids, but due to the higher cost of that type testing, Superintendent Dr. Paul Shaw says they won’t be doing that every time they test.
Board member Jan McDonald says this policy is not to accuse or convict anyone,it's to identify a problem and deal with it and help the student.
The drug testing policy was one of four policies adopted by the board Thursday night, the others deal with monitoring student athletes during hot weather, harassment and parental consent for student to join club at the school.
