Op-ed: End the Hypocrisy, Make Marijuana Legal

Legalizing marijuana for medical reasons is a good idea, but just a start. It should be decriminalized, period.

And this is coming from a non-smoker. I think I puffed a few back in college, but I didn't inhale, if you get my drift.

But seriously, the time has come to legalize marijuana. And then it should be taxed like hell. Let the states and the federal government reap a financial windfall. Unless you don't think Florida needs any more money.

Don't sell it to anyone under 21. And sell it in small amounts. But sell the stuff, tax it like mad, and end all the hypocrisy.

Is marijuana addictive? Perhaps, although I'm a lot more worried about a guy who has been downing very legal shots all day than I am about a guy who smoked a joint.

Is marijuana bad for your health? Perhaps, but so are greasy fast food burgers. And so are very legal cigarettes.

Is marijuana immoral? If you think it is, then don't smoke it.

Would teenagers be more likely to try and smoke marijuana if it's legalized? Doubtful. Take away the thrill and excitement of something "illegal", and I doubt legal marijuana would popular among teens.

And the costs of the war on drugs? Make marijuana legal, and you could have some mail cells suddenly available as you get rid of minor pot offenders who are holed up. To say nothing of the money that is spent tracking down users of "illegal" marijuana today.

Make it legal. Society won't crumble. In fact, I'll bet you'll see some improvements.
