Help stop Amendment 2 in its tracks

On November 2, Floridas open democratic process—or at least what remains of it—faces one of its gravest threats. State legislators have placed a measure on the ballot (Amendment 2) that effectively slams the door on Floridas current citizen petition initiative process.

Amendment 2 is a Trojan horse that contains the end of citizens' ability to create laws in Florida. Floridians must not let the legislature get away with this ploy.

Please act now to save the right of citizens to participate in the lawmaking process. You can use our system to put together a unique letter-to-the-editor urging your fellow Floridians to reject Amendment 2. Simply type in your zip code, then put together a letter based on our talking points, and with a click of the mouse your letter will be automatically sent to as many as five of the closest newspapers. The whole process takes less than five minutes, but it makes a world of difference.

The proposed measure, if passed, will not only shorten the deadline for collecting petitions by 90 days, but it will also require that all signatures be gathered before the Florida Supreme Court can rule on the initiative's legality. In effect, the amendment would require that citizens collect over 600,000 signatures roughly a year in advance of an election, if not longer, without even knowing if the state will deem the petition legal. The intent of this initiative is clear: Florida lawmakers want a monopoly on legislative power in Florida.
