Florida still targets medical marijuana patients

Florida's legislative session ended without a medical marijuana bill being introduced. Sadly, seriously ill Florida residents will continue to be treated as criminals for using their medicine—until legislators have the courage and compassion to act.

It is time to change the way Florida treats these patients. Please urge your legislators to introduce a medical marijuana bill next session: Only you can convince them that this issue is vital to Florida residents.

If Florida enacts a medical marijuana law, it will join a growing number of medical marijuana states. Nine states have enacted laws that protect medical marijuana patients from arrest and imprisonment. Additionally, in 2003, MPP helped Maryland pass a law that removed the threat of prison, but not arrest, for the medical use of marijuana. Polls consistently show massive public support for this issue. Florida legislators must learn that their constituents care about the fate of seriously ill Florida residents. In other news, S.J.R. 2396 and S.J.R. 2392—which would have restricted the initiative process—died in the House. But, despite a flood of e-mails by MPP members, S.J.R. 2394—which would cut the time period allowed for signature gathering—passed out of both chambers and will be referred to the November ballot.
