Title:
Drug war documentary, The House I Live In, screening in Hartford this week
Message:
Hartford’s Real Art Ways Cinema will be screening The House I Live In, the critically acclaimed new drug war documentary by director Eugene Jarecki, beginning Friday, March 15. After Friday evening’s 7:30 p.m. screening, Patrick Heintz, a retired corrections officer from LEAP (Law Enforcement Against Prohibition), will engage the audience in a post-film discussion.
The film deals with the serious consequences of the War on Drugs, including world-record rates of incarceration, the development of an influential prison-industrial complex, and, connected with these, the exacerbation of racial and class-based divisions in society. As with the prohibition of alcohol, current drug laws also enrich organized crime elements, which now control large and extremely profitable drug markets.
Making his case largely through interviews with supporters and opponents of the War on Drugs who are involved in it in various ways, Jarecki concludes that it is a cruel, expensive, and ineffective policy that has done great harm to the country, including the people who are ostensibly being protected from drugs by the law.
If you are in the Hartford area, don’t miss this opportunity to be entertained and educated, and bring a friend or two. Click here for more information on show times.
