Title:

Ct.: Marijuana bills could be voted on today

Message:

Tell your legislators to support decriminalization and medical marijuana

With the legislative session nearing an end, time is running out for two bills that would dramatically improve marijuana policy in Connecticut. Bills to decriminalize marijuana and enact a medical marijuana program could each be voted on any day now – including today.

Please take two minutes of your time to urge your elected officials to support marijuana decriminalization and to support medical marijuana.

Under current Connecticut law, possession of less than four ounces of marijuana is a misdemeanor punishable by up to a $1,000 fine and up to a year in prison. The decrim bill, SB 1014, would change the penalty for possession of less than half an ounce of marijuana to an infraction – a civil penalty, not a criminal one.

The medical marijuana bill, SB 1015, would exempt registered patients with serious illnesses from criminal penalties for the use or possession of up to an ounce of marijuana or four marijuana plants. Numerous amendments are on the table to address other means of access for patients, including through state-regulated dispensaries, so the final language of the bill could still change drastically.

Please urge your legislators to support both bills – medical marijuana and decriminalization – right now.

Thanks everyone!
